Understanding your rights helps you stay safe, informed, and prepared when interacting with government authorities or participating in civic activities in Connecticut.​

Know Your Rights: Immigration Enforcement

  • You have the right to remain silent and do not have to answer questions about your immigration status.

  • You do not have to open your door unless officers show a valid judicial warrant signed by a judge.

  • An administrative warrant from immigration authorities does not give agents the right to enter your home without consent.

  • You have the right to speak with a lawyer before answering questions or signing documents.

  • You do not have to sign anything you do not understand.

Know Your Rights: Peaceful Protest

  • You generally have the right to protest peacefully in public spaces such as sidewalks, parks, and town greens.

  • Law enforcement may impose reasonable time, place, and manner restrictions, but cannot restrict speech based on viewpoint.

  • You do not need a permit to march on sidewalks or gather in small groups, though larger events may require permits.

  • You have the right to record police activity in public spaces as long as you do not interfere.

  • If you are stopped by police, you can ask if you are free to leave.
